This Better Governor webinar was aimed at those; new to the role of chair, contemplating taking the chair, and those who simply wish to refresh their knowledge and practice. We explored the role and responsibilities of the chair of the board, explore good practice and focus on how the chair should lead the board.
This Better Governor 'Hot Topics' webinar explore key aspects of what is new and upcoming, in education and school governance, that those involved in governance, in academies and maintained schools, need to know about as we begin the Spring Term of 2021. We will focus on; the latest government advice for schools on Covid-19, Ofsted's evidence from their autumn term inspections, key changes in end of key stage assessments and public examinations for Summer 2021, and the consultation on Keeping Children Safe in Education for September 2021. We constantly monitor what happens in education and if other relevant issues arise, we will include those too.
The Department for Education published a new edition of Governor Update on 2nd December. The Update contains guidance on Governing Body and Trust Board meetings, and the department’s advice on governor visits to schools, during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
This Better Governor webinar explored the role of the chair of the governing body/trust board, from the perspective of the practical behaviours and actions that contribute to effective chairing and leadership of governance within a school or trust. Attendees received good practice guidance on how to ensure the chair can motivate, inspire and lead governors and trustees to deliver effective governance within their setting.
This Better Governor webinar explored the concept of Ethical Leadership in schools, with a particular focus on the work of school governance, both in maintained schools and academies. We clarified what is meant by Ethical Leadership, drawing on the work of the Ethical Leadership Commission and consider how the Framework for Ethical Leadership in Education principles should guide the work of schools and governance in 2020, moving towards 2021.
This Better Governor webinar explored good practice in the questions that governors in maintained schools and academies should ask as a key means of demonstrating accountability. With Covid-19 and the restrictions in places on how governance functions at present, we focused on key aspects of school provision that those in governance can prioritise and how questions can help fuel our strategic oversight.
This Better Governor Chairs' Forum explored, in the context of the current Covid-19 pandemic, how governors can continue to fulfil their monitoring role, whilst many schools are asking all potential visitors to stay away, in order to safeguard the health and well-being of staff and pupils. We focused on how chairs can foster an approach to governor monitoring, which maintains the integrity and impact of visits to the school but achieves this through virtual means.
We have received many calls and e-mails since the start of the academic year regarding the question of whether governor meetings this term should continue to be held virtually or is it now appropriate to revert to face-to-face meetings in school. The most recent guidance from the Department of Education (DfE) was published on this week in School Governance Update. The guidance on the subject is identical for maintained schools and academies.
This Better Governor webinar focused on the vital role that risk management has in schools. This session put risk assessment in its wider context for governors and trustees and explored the strategic oversight that governors should have of the process of managing all risks in their school or trust. The Covid-19 pandemic has raised the profile of risk assessment in relation to Health & Safety; this webinar has taken the focus beyond this and explore all areas of school lie where potential risks should be identified and managed.
This Better Governor webinar focused on what is new in terms of education policy and process, that is specifically relevant to all those involved in governance.
