    The Department for Education published a new edition of Governor Update on 2nd December. The Update contains guidance on Governing Body and Trust Board meetings, and the department’s advice on governor visits to schools, during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

    This Better Governor webinar explored the role of the chair of the governing body/trust board, from the perspective of the practical behaviours and actions that contribute to effective chairing and leadership of governance within a school or trust. Attendees received good practice guidance on how to ensure the chair can motivate, inspire and lead governors and trustees to deliver effective governance within their setting.

  • Exploring Ethical Governance (Recorded November 2020)

    This Better Governor webinar explored the concept of Ethical Leadership in schools, with a particular focus on the work of school governance, both in maintained schools and academies. We clarified what is meant by Ethical Leadership, drawing on the work of the Ethical Leadership Commission and consider how the Framework for Ethical Leadership in Education principles should guide the work of schools and governance in 2020, moving towards 2021.

    This Better Governor Chairs' Forum explored, in the context of the current Covid-19 pandemic, how governors can continue to fulfil their monitoring role, whilst many schools are asking all potential visitors to stay away, in order to safeguard the health and well-being of staff and pupils. We focused on how chairs can foster an approach to governor monitoring, which maintains the integrity and impact of visits to the school but achieves this through virtual means.

  • Governing Body meetings in Covid 19 – DfE advice

    We have received many calls and e-mails since the start of the academic year regarding the question of whether governor meetings this term should continue to be held virtually or is it now appropriate to revert to face-to-face meetings in school. The most recent guidance from the Department of Education (DfE) was published on this week in School Governance Update. The guidance on the subject is identical for maintained schools and academies.

  • Risk Management – the strategic oversight of governance (October 2020)

    This Better Governor webinar focused on the vital role that risk management has in schools. This session put risk assessment in its wider context for governors and trustees and explored the strategic oversight that governors should have of the process of managing all risks in their school or trust. The Covid-19 pandemic has raised the profile of risk assessment in relation to Health & Safety; this webinar has taken the focus beyond this and explore all areas of school lie where potential risks should be identified and managed.

DfE update school website requirements

On 12th February 2021, the Department for Education updated What maintained schools must publish online and the academy version; What academies, free schools and colleges should publish online. Both publications have been updated to reflect the statutory requirements relating to remote learning.
