    This Better Governor webinar explored the strategic oversight that governors and trustees in maintained schools and academies should have of the provision for disadvantaged pupils and the impact it has on outcomes. Those responsible for governance in all schools must hold their schools accountable for decisions made in relation to Pupil Premium expenditure. We focused on how governors and trustees can ensure their monitoring and evaluation of the progress disadvantaged pupils make is effective.

    This webinar focused on the assurance that governors and trustees should be seeking from their schools, relating to the safety of pupils at schools in normal times and during the current Coronavirus pandemic. We explored the broader definition of safeguarding, which includes health & safety and will explore how governors and trustees should be seeking assurance that schools are safe for learning and the range of other activities that may be occurring during the current situation.

    The government have been working collaboratively to develop coordinated systems and practices to support children's mental health and well-being. There is an expectation now, reflected in the current Ofsted inspection framework, that schools are actively engaged in recognising characteristics, signposting and in some instances having appropriate provision in schools to support pupils’ well-being and mental health.

Pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds worst affected by the loss of learning

The Department of Education (DfE) has published research findings examining the extent of learning amongst all students in England, during the Autumn and Spring terms of the current academic year. The research was conducted by The Education Policy Institute (EPI) and Renaissance Learning, for the DfE and follows interim findings from earlier research, published in February this year.
