Disadvantaged’ pupils - what does the term mean? Ofsted and the Department for Education have evolving and slightly different definitions.  Data is used to benchmark the performance of disadvantaged pupils against ‘other pupils’ in our schools and disadvantaged pupils nationally. As governors do we know how do we define disadvantaged pupils in our schools?

                   

Disadvantaged pupils attract funding that is ring-fenced and must be accounted for by the impact it is having on the performance of these pupils. How should we define disadvantaged pupils in our schools and what does it mean in relation to ‘closing the gap’? Most importantly, how do governors ensure no child is left behind?
